Says Who?
I don't like paying $3 and up, for a gallon of regular gas either. So far I haven't lost any sleep though. At the same time, if I was an investor. I wouldn't want the goverment putting a ceiling on my profits either. If I design an accessory that everyone on this computer uses. As long as people use it, and buy it. I should continue to get paid. That's what happened to Bill Gates. Even though gas is at it's highest ever, no one is parking their cars. As a matter of fact, the most popular sellers are SUV's. They use like twice the gas, of smaller cars. When gas gets to high to buy, we'll stop putting it in our tanks. I know this doesn't help at the pumps, but consider this. People in other countries, are already paying $8 a gallon. It could be better, but it could be worse.
Price gauging is one thing, filling a need is another. To sell your goods for the price people are willing to pay. Amounts to free enterprise, and is the principle on which this country was built. To catch people between a rock and a hard place, and exploit their vulnerability. Is absolutely a horse of another color. The last time I looked we didn't need gas to live, instead it's for convenience. I for one have altered my driving habits. I don't take two trips to do, what I can do in one. I know we won't, but we should take this as an opportunity to reflect. We as a society are much to dependent on oil. If it went up to $5 a gallon, what would we do then. Most of us wouldn't have any choice except to pay. We shop in stores,go to schools and worship in churches outside our neighborhoods. Some people have never even ridden public transportation. They wouldn't know where to begin. Last I looked it was a bargain. Cheaper than driving yourself. Most families have more than one car, we now have a mobile existence.
Last year oil companies reported record profits. ExxonMobil the leader, had reported earnings of $36 billion last year. The former CEO Lee Raymond, had a massive compensation and retirement package. He earned $69.7 in compensation, and $98 million in a pension buyout . Most of us made more last year, than we did the year before. Of course we didn't get what Lee Raymond did, but join the club. Gas and everything costs more, but thank God. Somehow I manage to pay. If anybody has some gas, I feel like I will. People didn't start to complain until after Hurrricane Katrina. That was an act of God, without mans help. The oil executives told us what to expect. It appears they knew what they were talking about. I think the President is taking advantage, of the situation. At first the American public was blaming him. Some of them still are. If anybody knows, it's him. He can't do anything about gas prices. If he could lower gas prices, don't you think he would? His popularity would go through the roof. As for the CEO's, I'm not mad at them. They're only doing their jobs. A good job, I might add. Higher profits translate to higher dividends. That's what he's hired for. I'm sure the stockholders are happy with their performance. When asking whether or not the oil executives are doing a good job, it depends on who you ask. The average consumer would wonder, if you're joking. Those cashing those dividend checks, would wonder who you're talking about.
The gas creeped up before I knew it. It went up like 40 cent in a week. People never stopped going to the gas station.
ReplyDeleteKevin,
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. It went from $2.65 to almost $3.00, seems like overnight.
Anti-T,
ReplyDeleteAre we embarking on another career? That's a good one. LOL
Does anyone remember the gas shortage in the 70’s? In Missouri, my family was blessed to be living in a neighborhood where the owner of the corner service station only opened his pumps for the people who lived in the neighborhood. I do not have that luxury here in Tennessee and I do not think it exist in many neighborhoods anymore.
ReplyDeleteTo my point, Former President Jimmy Carter said the same thing President Bush is saying now “We are spoiled”.
Common you said it in your post; other countries are paying twice or triple at the pumps than what we are paying. Being spoiled comes with a price. Unfortunately, this price is going to hurt worse than it did in the 70’s. As you, all know with high gas prices the domino effect is going to hit us all one way or another. I was not born with a silver spoon, but I have reaped the rewards this country has to offer. Let us pray and hope we survive our unstable situations in America and educate and empower our lost young generation to keep America strong and alive. Let me get off my soapbox, I think you all know what I am talking about without elaborating on specifics.
Bishop,
ReplyDeleteThat's all we can do, I'm with you.
Binders Off,
ReplyDeleteThis is the place to stand on that soapbox. We welcome all opinions here, even if we disagree. Unfortunately you won't get a debate on that issue from me. I agree with everything you said. Welcome
thank God i can afford the gas. i really encourage everyone to purchase those gas caps the ones you can lock with a key. they are only 3.79 at autozone. my friend girl, works at methodist germantown she is an RN, and she filled up her suv on the way to work, she stated that when she got off she only had 1/4 tank of gas.
ReplyDeletethis is not one of those internet rumors. this is true. so unless you wanna be stranded somewhere, especially if you have one of those doors to your gas tank that you can flip open, i truly suggest investing in 3.79. later
blinders, the only thing i remotely remember about the gas shortage from the 70's is an episode of good times. lol.
ReplyDeletei homeschooled my son for two years and he and i did a project on fossil fuel. this is really an interesting topic. which opened my eyes to a lot of things such as....global warming, climatic change, severe hurricanes, deadly tornadoes, flooding, melting of polar caps, famine, drought, disease and more importantly misuse of removing the fossil fuels from the sea bed. i know you just met me and this may seem a little strange, however; dont take my word for it. research it.
it takes millions and millions and millions of years to form layers of fossil fuel, but it takes months to remove it. the united states consumes more fuel than another country!!!! the problem is that we cant produce enough to survive off of. im closing on my point, the only reason that we are in the gulf is because of OIL.
i understand that we need that oil, and i also understand that whoever contols that oil, will be able to run things on a global level in the next 10-15 years. the war in iraq, ain't about humanatarian issues!!! its about that black gold.
question......what can this country do with out oil?
Ladybug,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you mentioned that. I need one on my truck. The car has a locking gas cap already. It opens on the inside. I don't keep that much gas in my truck anyway. LOL
Anti-T,
ReplyDeleteI should have known, you drive an SUV. I was joking with some ladies at church yesterday, about the same thing. I bet you have a Yukon or a Tahoe. If not an Expedition. I would say Escalade, but you don't strike me as being flashy. Just as having expensive taste. Your gas bill, was extremely high anyway. Fifty minutes one way, you work in another locale.
anti,
ReplyDeletewhoooweee, girl, oh my goodness, 50 miles....you must be coming from westwood! that is 100miles per day. my church is about 20 miles and i thought that was a long drive. just think, at least your car is paid for, i still have 2 more years before im finally free of a car note. i know it feels really good. between gas and car insurance......having nice things are so expensive.
Anti-T, You need a hybird.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about supply and demand. If we didn't buy it, they wouldn't sell it. I know that's easy to say that, but that's real.
ReplyDeleteRegular Gasoline is $2.57 a gallon in New Albany Miss.
ReplyDeleteAnti-T,
ReplyDeleteI was told it's about seventy miles from Memphis. Out Hwy. 78 going toward Tupelo Miss. It probably wouldn't be worth it in most cases. It's probably an old load of gas anyway.
