Come Get Me Mother

People die everyday, it's a fact of life. So much so, that we have become indifferent to a degree. Sometimes we lose something or someone, that makes a noticeable dent. From that point on, life is somehow different. Something such as this happened about 9pm Saturday night. Life will be different from 2 to 6 pm Monday thru Friday. And from 8 to 12 on Saturday mornings. We lost a legend in local radio, "Preston Moore" aka "Jaye Micheal Davis". He was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife Lisa Moore was injured also. She survived, but is in critical condition. We will keep her in our prayers. As someone who calls the different radio talk shows. I have had the pleasure of talking with Jaye. I can say on several different occasions. Jaye has sided with me, in spite of his co-host and other callers. I can truly say "Jaye" was a man, among Disc Jockeys. He always carried himself as a Man. Even when we disagreed, we parted as men. He truly would respectfully agree, to disagree. He never said or did anything, where he should later be ashamed. He was the only person I knew, that had his own opinion. And stuck to his guns. In spite of what popular public opinion was. That somehow, didn't offend anyone. He was the only radio personality I conversed with. That didn't have an issue with their ego. Unlike everybody else on the radio, he didn't argue the point. That's not necessarily a bad thing. For those people that will. That's just one characteristic he didn't have. He signed off for the last time Saturday morning, with his usual last words. "Come get me mother" a saying he made famous. I can only hope Jaye's behavior was an extension of his faith. I don't know if he was saved or not, but I pray he was. I would like to change his last words a little, for this one occasion. "Come get him Father". He has crossed the finish line.

Funeral services for popular WDIA disc jockey Jaye Michael Davis will be Saturday.
The disc jockey, whose real name was Preston Moore, was killed Saturday in a motorcycle crash in Tunica County that left his wife, Lisa Moore, 40, seriously injured. She remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

Moore, 62, had been a deejay at WDIA-AM 1070 since 1977. He hosted an afternoon show of oldies and rhythm and blues music.
He also co-hosted a talk show, "What's on Your Mind Line," and cranked out the blues on Saturday mornings during the "Rufus Thomas All Blues Saturday."

Hundreds of messages have been left by fans on the station's Web site about Moore.

"I never met Jaye personally, just was a faithful listener. I feel like I've truly lost a friend and would like to send out my condolences to Jaye's family, his wife Lisa and children and his WDIA family," wrote one fan.

Moore had been a Shelby County sheriff's deputy since 1994 and served in the fugitive division on the midnight shift.

He and his wife were celebrating their wedding anniversary when his 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a car in the intersection of Casino Strip Boulevard and U.S. 61.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.

Visitations have been set up throughout the city for fans and friends to pay their respects.

The first visitation will be today from noon to 8 p.m. at N.J. Ford Funeral Home at 12 South Parkway. Another visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Hill Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at 4583 Raleigh-LaGrange Road.

The last visitation will be held from 8 to 10:55 a.m. Saturday at World Overcomers Church at 6655 Winchester. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with burial at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

  5. Bishop,

I didn't go to the funeral, but my brother did. I heard the funeral on the radio. It was nice, except one of the speeches was a bit long. I suppose the minister who officiated, must have been a personal friend. I think A.R. Williams or Robert Jones, would have done a better job. I didn't know what James was talking about, but my brother explained. I think it was a good move myself. I was tired of James. What about the statue?

  6. Bishop,

I don't think it is a graven image, I think it makes a statement. We get caught up on this church and state thing. Man puts state, before he does church. This statue simply states as Christians, we should put church first.

  7. Bishop,

Let's just hope someone does. That makes everything worth the debate. We both know that for sure.
