He Needs To Give It A Rest

This ranting and raving has worked in the past, but I don't think it will this time. This goes deeper than the voters of 6th district, it involves the FBI. I notice Ford tried to issue a threat to the other councilmembers. I can tell he felt betrayed because they seem to have closed ranks on him. This is yet more proof of the Mayors claim that, "none of the councilmen are leadership material". What Edmund Ford doesn't seem to understand is he is all by himself. Even Ricky Peete doesn't get involved. Nobody is going to take a chance on putting the spotlight on themselves. Regardless what anyone else has done, that still doesn't clear him. They may be guilty as sin, but he's the one that got caught. I'm sure he was at all the meetings looking for opportunities for kickbacks or just being disruptive. I guess we can see where his defense is headed. Like many of those indicted before him. I don't think it's going to work this time.

Churchwell pleads guilty in Main Street Sweeper case
By Trevor Aaronson (Contact)
Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Dennis Churchwell, the landlord of indicted former City Councilman Edmund Ford Sr., pleaded guilty in federal court today to one count of felony perjury.

Churchwell admitted he lied to a grand jury by saying Ford was not delinquent in paying rent for 3390 Elvis Presley Blvd., where the politician runs E. H. Ford Mortuary Services.

Churchwell appeared before the grand jury on March 27, 2007, as part of Operation Main Street Sweeper, which investigated, among other things, how Ford Sr. used his elected position for personal financial gain.

According to a statement of facts signed by Churchwell and submitted to the court, Ford on July 19, 2005, lobbied for and voted in favor of a special-use permit that allowed Churchwell to store heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, at his property at 3403 Elvis Presley Blvd. In turn, Churchwell allowed Ford to become delinquent on his $2,500 monthly rent.

During their investigation, federal authorities tried to determine whether Churchwell forgave the rent in exchange for Ford’s help in obtaining the special-use permit.

When interviewed by the FBI in February 2007, Churchwell said Ford was about $24,000 behind in rent, according to the statement of facts. His story changed one month later when he appeared before a grand jury.

“At the end of 2005, he was paid up,” Churchwell said of Ford while under oath.

Tax records didn’t substantiate that claim. On her 2005 tax form, Churchwell’s wife Lynley reported $4,610 in rental income from 3390 Elvis Presley Blvd. when the income should have been as much as $30,000.

Under the plea agreement, federal prosecutors will drop five other perjury charges against Churchwell.

He will be sentenced Aug. 5.
