Former Deputy jailer Monique Johnson executed her boyfriend-policeman Tony Hayes in 2006 while in a jealous rage over him seeing another woman, state prosecutors said today in opening arguments in Johnson's first-degree murder trial.

Johnson enlisted the help of her teenaged son to stuff Hayes’ body in the trunk of his car.

“This was an execution,” state prosecutor Dean DeCandia told a Criminal Court Jury. “It was an execution and evasion. (The details) will make every one of you shiver.”

Defense attorney Arthur Horne assumed the persona of his client in opening statements.

“I’m a victim of domestic abuse,” he told jurors. “I shot him defending myself. For the first time I stood up to him. I was scared.”

Hayes disappeared Sept. 3, 2006, after he had dinner with his family. His wife filed a missing-person report the next day. A few days later, according to records in the case, Johnson admitted she knew where to find Hayes' body, which was in the trunk of his 1999 Lexus. The death was ruled a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Hayes, who lived in Cordova, had been on the department for nine years, and according to his superiors was a good officer.

Johnson, who worked at the men's jail at 201 Poplar, was hired in August 2001. She faces life in prison if convicted.

She likely will take the stand later in the week.

  3. This guy's first appearance back in the public, shouldn't be him crying foul and playing the race card like I heard today.
