Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right
Joe Towns Jr. has came up with a outdated liberal idea. I haven't heard anything from him in quite some time. Except his record of excessive spending. Read about it : http://indepcons.blogspot.com/2007/07/did-tennesseans-foot-bill.html His latest suggestion, must be to get his name mentioned. It's like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a lot of Memphis money is going to Tunica. Somewhere they've came up with a figure of $350 million. They didn't bother to explain what money goes where. The vast majority of that money went to the owners and workers at the casinos. Not directly to the state, as supporters of this idea would have you think. Joe Towns Jr. knows anybody that agrees with him, won't have the insight to consider that.
Bringing casinos to Memphis wouldn't be free. Not to mention the crime that it would bring. In a city where crime is already off the chain. It would be naive to think it wouldn't get worse. Unless of course , Memphis is already being credited with those crimes. I wrote a blog about that as well : http://indepcons.blogspot.com/2007/10/memphis-metropolitan-area.html Gambling isn't a way to economic parity. It's going to hurt more than it's going to help. It'll turn out like the lottery and the "Hope scholarships." History tells me "two wrongs, don't make a right."

That's exactly what it is...an idea. He is recycling an idea Larry Miller had around the time the lottery was established.
It won't make it out of committee -- just like the rest of Joe's bills. And don't think he doesn't know this.
Even if the bill made it out of the House, the Senate would kill it faster than Raid on a cockroach...if the lobbyists don't get to it first. The Mississippi casinos have a formidable presence in the Tennessee Legislature.
I'm glad we agree. The only other thing I would have mentioned is, "he is taking a page out of Steve Cohen's handbook."
I think Joe Towns Jr. is a career State Representative. Who has no where to go politically. The "Tennessee Waltz" has taken all the perks out of that. The office has no buzz, so he has to create some. I think he views this as a possible step to the next level.
What do you think about toll booths?
1. I was surprised that Joe wasn't taken down in the sting. As for being a career politician, apparently Whitehaven loves him.
2. Cohen tried to push horse racing a decade ago because Herenton wanted a track in the city. It didn't work, of course. Herenton got mad, too. Larry has been behind "straight up" casino gambling. Herenton has an interest in that, too.
3. I'm not a fan of toll roads because the gasoline tax was supposed to be specifically for road building. For years, government officials bragged about having a pay-as-you-go system versus floating bonds to pay for improvements like other states. If we go to toll roads, the gasoline money will likely go into the general fund.
I would consider HOT lanes, where they allow people to pay a toll to use a particular part of the road (i.e., HOV lanes). The reason I can agree to that is because most people break HOV lane laws anyway. We can at least make some money off of them.
