What Do We Do About Guns In School

We have had two shootings in Memphis city schools in the past seven days. I know this is an anxious time, but let's not do anything impulsively. One of the school board members suggested the extreme measures of closing down the schools immediately, until metal detectors can be used at all the schools everyday. I think that's a little over the top. All schools don't even have this issue anyway. It sounds good , but it doesn't do anything to solve the problem. It's not as much about sneaking guns in the schools, as it is why one child would shoot another? They won't catch each other at the school, it'll be in the mall. It's about what's convenient. If we get rid of guns, they'll start using shanks. Some of these schools are like minimum security prisons. Unfortunatly instead of all would-be trustee students. There are some solitary confinement candidates in there too. Eight hours out of the day, the child is a ward of the school. Parents can't control the classroom from another location. We have to adapt a no tolerance policy to get the schools back in line. We already know who did the shooting. Let's not waste time with trials and procedures. We need to enforce it in and out of the schools.

  1. I would like to say that when I hear about school shootings at school, I'm not all that suprised because its a common thing. I do agree with you that closings school down until something can be done is just insane. The school board member who said that must have been not thinking straight. If they close the schools day, then how will the students then learn? At the school I graduated from last year, they have a program where you can get money for turning someone in if they see risky or bad event that is about to happen. The student would not be identified. There has to been something done with guns in the school. A stronger policy and consquences would be in effect, not now, but right now.

  2. The schools are reflective of the community. With all these shootings going on in the community. Why wouldn't there be shooting in the schools also? I'm not in favor of paying students to tell on each other, but I don't fight against it. We need some folks on the job all the time.

The Mayor has agreed to put 67 officers in the schools full-time.That move in itself is a $4 million endeavor. This is not something that can be solved with money. If it could, we wouldn't be having a problem.
