Politics From The Pulpit

You would have been hard pressed to find a pulpit today where they weren't discussing politics and this weeks historical election. Some congregations were happy and some were sad. Needless to say it generally broke down racial lines. The 501C3 rules apply to endorsing candidates, not showing your approval or disapproval after the election is over. I hope this enthusiasm won't blow over and be just another moment in history on BET. I remember this same exuberance when we elected our first black mayor in Memphis. Now we're at the top of some crime statistic lists and he has an army of those who dislike him.

Now blacks over the entire country are on a brand new high. Barack Obama has ignited a sense of pride only rivaled by Martin Luther King Jr. and his march on Washington. Where he gave the famous "I have a dream" speech. I hope the things that blacks have been bragging about will rub off on them. You don't have to be a President to be a responsible, hardworking, dedicated husband and father. If his example will bring about a decline in unwed pregnancy and crime. Create a new found desire for education and family values. This will be a good thing. This is what the churches have supposed to have been teaching all the time, but obviously they weren't getting through. Maybe this country needs a dose of politics from the pulpit.
