As much as his name recognition and long record of public service. Mayor Willie Herenton has something else working for him too. He has a large number of what we'll call disgruntled Negros on his side. Those are votes he doesn't even have to earn. They are his by default. Every person that was looking for special favors from Steve Cohen and didn't get them. Are bitter and suddenly critical of what they have ignored in the past. His votes in support of same-sex marriage will matter this time. Some of his most committed campaign workers are now campaigning against him.
Like I have said since Willie Herenton first mentioned he planned to run for congress. Steve Cohen is going to experience the same thing Hillary Clinton did. He can continue telling himself and those who will listen that race doesn't matter. That may have been true in the past, but not this time. Blacks will follow a white politician to the end until a viable black candidate enters the race. This won't be anything like running against Nikki Tinker. Her backers discovered you can't buy enough votes and influence to win this district. Only a popular candidate can win. Cohen's opponent this time won't be "sitting on the porch." He will be in the ring throwing bruising punches like he was Saturday. Steve Cohen better strap his gloves on tight. He's in for a fight.

You are right about this going to be a fight and it is going to be a nasty fight.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to people who live in Memphis, Cohen has a lot of support. Yes, there are people who are disgruntle with him, but there are just as many people disgruntle with Herenton. Cohen can pull this off; they both have political job performance records. It all depends on whose record is the worst in the voting public eyes.
One thing for sure it is going to be very interesting and from what I seen in the past with Memphis politics. It is definitely going to be about race and Herenton is going make what Tinker did look like child’s play.
The 9th District campaigning is going to be worse than watching the Presidential campaigning because of race.
There are disgruntled voters all over the place in every state and district. Not sure how race is a factor about being disgruntled. I am disgruntled about crime.
ReplyDeleteBlinders Off,
ReplyDeleteThe truth of the matter is most of those people who dislike Mayor Herenton don't live in Memphis anyway. They might not like him but they don't have a vote. On the other hand most of those in district 9 do, except for a few who live in Millington.
BTW; nice photo
Tom,
ReplyDeleteObviously you don't live in Memphis or the immediate vicinity, and aren't familiar with Memphis politics.
For a opinion other than mine read the link.
Common,
ReplyDeleteI am referring to people who live in Memphis that can vote in the
9th District that support Cohen. You have to remember all of us retired military transplants with grown children in Shelby County did not make Millington home.
Retired military made a difference in Millington Mayor’s race four years ago and last September. I brought that up because it is about the numbers and if a segment swings one way or the other it can affect the outcome of the election.
The people I know who can vote in the 9th District says, "What has Herenton done for the city lately?" It is not about not liking him, in there opinion he is entering this race because he is bored and Cohen pissed him off.
I could be wrong, but I think Cohen is going to win. Any who, I will be reading you and the other bloggers take on the race when the time comes.
Blinders Off,
ReplyDeleteThose people in Memphis you talk about won't be enough to elect Steve Cohen again. When they get through exposing his voting record. Some of those people will abandon him anyway. You probably make a point, but I'm so glad Herenton is running for the post. I'm not entertaining the thought of him losing. I think he is the only one that can beat him.
Many of those retired military people you speak of won't miss a chance to vote for Bill Gibbons to vote for Steve Cohen. They would rather have a Republican Governor than vote in a race where they get a Democrat either way.
I pray to God, Bill Gibbons do not win the Governor seat, for reasons I will not discuss in the blogosphere. Did you see the "The Bulletin...Stop General William Lee Gibbons?" That is in circulation around Memphis and Shelby County. It is very interesting. If you did not let me know I will scan it and email it to you?
