Too Off The Chain

There have long been rumors of Kenneth Whalum positioning himself to run for Mayor. I thought he would have been a good challenger in the 9th congressional district. But Steve Cohen squashed that when he renamed the post office after his father. So I guess it's to be expected that he would throw his name in the hat in this one. Some of these names are just being mentioned. They haven't officially declared that they are running yet. I hope Kenneth Whalum is one of those who doesn't run. He has the power to cause trouble but he can't win. In a few years he will be ready to take the reigns. Right now he's too off the chain.

Whalum Jr. has "change of heart," will run for mayor

Rev. Kenneth Whalum Jr. says he has had a "change of heart" and will run in the City of Memphis's special mayoral election.

Whalum, the pastor of New Olivet Baptist Church and a member of the Memphis school board, had told The Commercial Appeal on Wednesday -- the day before Mayor Willie Herenton announced his resignation -- that he was "absolutely" not interested "no matter what happens with a special election."

"I have had a change of heart and I fully, fully intend to be a candidate in the special election," Whalum said today. "When it dawned on me that the mayor truly was resigning, it made me say, 'If not now, when?' Since I planned to do it in 2011, I decided to go ahead and do it now."

Whalum said "what really put me over the edge is that I am the only candidate opposed to consolidation."

Other declared candidates in the field are Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, City Council chair and future interim mayor Myron Lowery and former city council member Carol Chumney.
