Are They Serious
I was wondering why Larry Porter was the only name I was hearing in the hunt for a replacement for Coach Tommy West. Then I saw his picture and it started to make sense.I think he is the only black in the running. I hope R.C. Johnson doesn't get the best football coach he ever hired for less than he is worth. I have always been critical of his handling of John Calipari. He went out and found the money to aid him in his fleecing of the basketball program over and over again. I don't want him to start to cut corners now.
The newspaper made a point to mention his present salary was $316,500 a year. Considerably less than they were paying Tommy West. He was earning nearly $1million for a marginally successful team in my opinion. http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/jul/23/west-gets-contract-extension/ I hope this isn't the equivalent of a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Tommy West told them to "get serious or get out." Are they serious?

The Memphis Edge» Dan Wolken on Tiger Basketball Phil Stukenborg on Tiger Football Behind Enemy Lines Stats and Scores Memphis Tigers' search for new football coach narrows to two
By Phil Stukenborg
Posted November 23, The search for the next University of Memphis football coach is moving at an accelerated pace as the regular season winds to a close and it appears the race to replace Tommy West is down to two candidates: Washington Redskins defensive assistant Jerry Gray and LSU assistant head coach Larry Porter.
Sources close to the process said Sunday that Gray, 46, or Porter, 37, could be named as early as next week. The Tigers (2-9) play their finale Friday at Tulsa in a Conference USA game that will end the nine-year run of West. West, the former Clemson coach, led the program to five bowl appearances in the past seven seasons, but his teams have gone 17-32 since 2006.
Late last week Gray, Porter, Lambuth coach Hugh Freeze and Tennessee running backs coach Eddie Gran were considered finalists. Gray and Porter emerged after the weekend.
Gray is a relative latecomer to the process -- at least publicly -- but has intriguing credentials. Secondary coach for the Redskins, Gray served as defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2001-2005 before joining Washington. He reportedly was in line to take over the Redskins last month as interim coach had head coach Jim Zorn been fired.
His connection to the Memphis job would appear to be a relationship with FedEx founder and CEO Fred Smith, a part owner of the Redskins. Smith, a prominent UofM booster, has a son, Cannon, who will compete for the starting quarterback job next season. Cannon transferred from the University of Miami before the season began and sat out this fall per NCAA guidelines regarding transfers.
Porter, who interviewed for the job last week, has been considered a favorite since the search process began because of his background. He has been the Rivals.com national recruiter of the year twice in the past three years and is a former U of M running back.
Porter was in Memphis with the LSU team last weekend. The LSU football team stayed in Memphis on Friday night ahead of its Saturday Southeastern Conference showdown with Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. The Rebels won the game, 25-23, in dramatic fashion and Porter declined to answer a question after the game regarding Memphis' interest in him.
Neither Gray nor Porter has head coaching experience at any level. Gray, a former University of Texas defensive back, was a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1985 and spent nine seasons in the NFL earning four trips to the Pro Bowl. Porter, one of the top 10 rushers in U of M history, has spent the past eight seasons on the staffs of Oklahoma State and LSU under coach Les Miles.
Porter hires Tide intern Irvin with football pedigree
By Phil Stukenborg

Another assistant hired, another University of Alabama connection.
New University of Memphis coach Larry Porter is expected to recommend former Michigan State running back Sedrick Irvin to the Tennessee State Board of Regents as his running backs coach.
Irvin, cousin of former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, is an intern on the Alabama staff working with running backs. The Crimson Tide plays Texas for the national championship next month.
Earlier this month, former Alabama coach Mike DuBose was recommended to the TBR as the UofM's defensive line coach. DuBose will join the program after a successful run at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. At Millsaps, DuBose, 56, led the Majors to four straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles and two NCAA Division 3 playoff appearances.
In hiring Sedrick Irvin, Porter adds another assistant with some name recognition. Irvin, 31, was a perennial 1,000-yard rusher at Michigan State under Nick Saban, now the Alabama head coach. Irvin played for the Spartans from 1996 to 1998 and was a member of the backfield when a 21st-ranked Michigan State team overpowered Memphis, 51-21, in 1997 in East Lansing.
During his three seasons at Michigan State, Irvin amassed the fourth-most rushing yards in the program's history.
Irvin left after his junior season to enter the NFL Draft. He was selected in the fourth round, with the 103rd overall pick, by the Detroit Lions and spent two seasons in the NFL before being forced out of the game by consistent injuries.
He resurfaced in college football in 2008 when he joined Saban's staff as an assistant to running backs coach Burton Burns. Irvin, known for his upbeat personality in college, has made an impact. When Alabama running back Mark Ingram won the first Heisman Trophy in the program's history last weekend, he gave Irvin credit for helping him develop as a runner.
"I'd also like to thank our intern, Sedrick Irvin, for being there for me, being my idol on the field," Ingram said during his acceptance speech. "He's been there for me since Day 1."
Porter, hired Nov. 29 to replace Tommy West, has yet to name either his offensive or defensive coordinators.
Notes: Junior college teammates Dejarrius Adams and Alphonso Bruton, who also were high school teammates, signed National Letters of Intent with the UofM on Wednesday, the first day for junior college players to sign. Adams and Bruton, both of whom attended El Camino (Calif.) Community College, will enroll in January and participate in spring workouts.
Adams, a 6-2, 205-pound receiver, was a member of the UofM's February 2009 class, but remained at El Camino to complete graduation requirements. In 2008, he played in nine games and had 25 catches for 325 yards and two touchdowns.
Bruton, a 6-3, 225-pound linebacker, was a team captain in 2008 and helped El Camino to a 10-2 record. Among his season highlights was a punt he blocked and returned 10 yards for a touchdown. A native of Miami, Bruton played at Killian High and earned third-team All-Dade honors in 2006.
Adams and Bruton will re-unite with former El Camino teammates Greg Ray and Justin Thompson at Memphis. Ray is a Tiger running back and Thompson a defensive lineman.
