Beat Horses With Ponies

After the romp that Tennessee put on Memphis this weekend. The possibility of Tommy West losing his job was more likely than ever. The frustration seemed to be present at both ends. The fans tired of hearing excuses and West tired of making them.Though I don't think Tommy West is the man to take this team to the next level. He is a good coach and I agree with a lot of his criticism of the program. He is one of those quality support staff a new head coach should have the university backing to hire. You can't beat horses with ponies.

  1. Five coaches reportedly on short list to succeed Tigers' Tommy West
R.C. Johnson narrows field, but no interviews yet
    By Phil Stukenborg

Five names -- Larry Porter, Rick Stockstill, Terry Bowden, Gunter Brewer and Bud Foster -- have emerged as leading candidates to become the next University of Memphis football coach, according to sources close to the process.

But Tigers athletic director R.C. Johnson, who would only confirm he had pared a list of 50 considerably, said no candidates have been interviewed to replace Tommy West, who was dismissed Monday after nine seasons as UofM coach. West, 55, will coach through the end of the season.

''There are an awful lot of people out there who are pretty excited about this job,'' Johnson said.

Porter, a former UofM running back, is considered a prime candidate because of his position as assistant head coach and chief recruiter at LSU, where he has spent the past five seasons. Porter, 37, has twice been named National Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com and is familiar recruiting the Memphis area.

Stockstill, 51, is in his fourth season at Middle Tennessee, where he has the Blue Raiders bowl eligible at 6-3 and in second place in the Sun Belt Conference. A former assistant under West at Clemson, Stockstill has defeated the UofM twice since arriving at MTSU, including a 31-14 victory earlier this year.

Bowden, the former successful Auburn coach, was hired at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Ala., Jan. 1 after 10 years as a TV and radio analyst and has the fifth-ranked Lions 10-1 heading into the NCAA Division 2 playoffs. Bowden, 53, went 47-17-1 in six seasons at Auburn from 1993-98, including going 20-1-1 in his first two seasons.

Last year Bowden, son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, interviewed at West Virginia, his alma mater, in an attempt to replace Rich Rodriguez. His name also has been linked with several jobs that might open after this season ends, including Central Florida.

Brewer, 45, is in his fifth season at Oklahoma State and his second as co-offensive coordinator. In his first three years, he was the team's wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. A former Marshall associate offensive coordinator and receivers coach, he was with the Thundering Herd when it went 13-0 and finished with a No. 10 national ranking in 1999. While at Marshall, Brewer worked with Randy Moss.

Foster is a name that surfaced at midweek. The longtime Virginia Tech defensive coordinator told the Washington Post he'd be interested in the opening because ''I think there's a lot of things that are attractive about it.'' Foster, a 1981 graduate of Murray State, has a Memphis connection. He and John Flowers, the UofM's director of football operations, both attended Nokomis (Ill.) High and have known each other for years.

Foster, in his 23rd year at Virginia Tech and 15th as coordinator, won the Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant coach, in 2006 and has been a finalist for the award three other times. In each of the past five years, the Hokies have ranked in the top 10 in total defense. They led the nation in total defense in 2005 and '06.

Johnson said a strong group of candidates has emerged because of the job done by West in elevating the program from a perennial loser (six straight losing seasons from 1995-2000) to a consistent postseason team (five bowls in the past seven years).

''Tommy has taken us from one level to the next level and now we want to get to the next level,'' Johnson said.

Despite a paring of his list, Johnson said he hasn't stopped accepting names of potential candidates.

''Obviously I have some people I am thoroughly checking, but I haven't told people to quit calling with recommendations or names because you just never know,'' Johnson said. ''It's kind of like the basketball search. We kept having different names pop up and because the program is what it is, it was worth checking out."
