Might Be Broken

I don't have the heart or desire to remind University of Memphis fans that it was just a matter of time before we fell off that tightrope we've been on lately. They played a good game with plenty of heart against Arizona, but they did well to go as far as they did. Like I always said they wouldn't rise any higher than Will Coleman. He showed glimmers of greatness but nothing consistent.  Him and the team both had their up and down moments. They could have won this game if they had hit their free throws. If they don't get it together next year. Even though the team only has one senior. The circle as we now know it might be broken

  3. This is what I was alluding to in my post. If he could go pro he would. I hope he is getting his education.

Will Barton apparently did most of the talking.

"I brought him in and we sat and talked a little bit, and he said it all on his own," University of Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner said Monday.

Barton, the 6-6, 175-pound freshman guard from Baltimore, didn't need Pastner to tell him he wasn't ready for the NBA. He had figured that out on his own.

"He said, 'I need to get bigger. I need to get stronger. There's things I need to get better on, and I know I'm not ready, '" said Pastner, who met with Barton and other players individually Monday and will continue those meetings today.

While some, including Barton himself, speculated in the preseason that he might be one-and-done, Barton, an All-Conference USA third-team selection, announced Monday via Twitter that he was returning for his sophomore season.

"Ending all speculation. ... I will be coming back 4 my sophomore season. No declaring or testing waters. We gonna do this the right way," he wrote.

Barton would have had until April 24 to declare for the draft. He could retain his college eligibility if he did not hire an agent and withdrew his name by May 8.

Pastner said Barton, Memphis' leading scorer (12.3) and second-leading rebounder (4.9), made the right decision.

Although he was second among C-USA freshmen in scoring and third on the team in assists (99), Barton committed 89 turnovers and shot 42.8 percent.

"I hadn't really done a lot of homework, but I had a pretty good sense of where things would be," Pastner said. "I think if you're a first-round pick, you probably need to go. Him coming back was the smart and right decision."

Before Monday, ESPN's Chad Ford didn't have Barton, who was on C-USA's All-Freshman team, on his list of potential draft entries. On Monday, after Barton's tweet, Ford added Barton to his "Out" list, writing, "He's a big-time talent, but he struggled to live up to the hype as a freshman. He'll need to prove to scouts he's more than just a scorer at the next level, but he's capable of working his way into the first round with a great (2011-12) season."

Pastner said Barton told him that he loved Memphis.

"Those were his exact words to me," Pastner said. "He said, 'I love being a college kid here. I love the school.' And he goes, 'I don't wanna go out the way we did, losing in the first round (of the NCAA Tournament).'"

Pastner said he has not met with forward Wesley Witherspoon, who said last Friday after Memphis' 77-75 loss to Arizona that he plans to return for his senior season.
