The Tape Tells Nothing

I waited for the tell all tape, that was supposed to pull the cover off Mayor Herenton. The mayor was subpenoaed, not indicted. That's a major difference. I must say I was sadly disappointed, when I heard what the media had. I'm surprised at the coverage, of Eyewitness News. They're usually informative and objective, in their news stories. The tape was merely a discussion between two people, one being a contractor seeking business. The other being someone already convicted, and have served their jail time. So much for their credibility. Not to mention this tape isn't recent. It's unfair to assume Mayor Herenton is involved with wrongdoing, just because of his accquaintance with Mayor Campbell. The circle for Black mayors of major metropolitan cities, isn't that big. Someone who has been in office as long as Willie Herenton, is likely to know quite a few of them. If they investigate any Black mayor in the south. Mayor Herentons name is bound to be mentioned. All this as a result of what a former Campbell aide said, in exchange for not being prosecuted.

Those who don't like the mayor, are salivating over this. There are several things going on in the city, to undermine this administration. Some citizens have a problem with everything he does. Just because it was his doing. I won't say residents, because many of them don't even live in Memphis. Something like this, just adds fuel to their fires. This is not a new investigation. It's over seven years old. Many of the defendants have been convicted, and already served their jail time. If Mayor Herenton was guilty of anything other than guilt by association. He wouldn't be giving testimony, he would be on trial himself. If there is anyone who might end up in trouble it's Reginald French. Just like Dewey Clark admitted taking money for himself. I think this could also be the case with Mr. French. Just like Mayor Herenton though, he's not the one on trial.

I am beginning to think you are either WWH or one of his employees. That's about the only way you could continue to support him. His day is coming. Just wait.

What you are writing is biased tripe. When WWH was elected, he was celebrated by the community. Everything looked great. His picture was constantly in the paper as he attended social events hosted in the homes of prominent Memphians. What changed? Don't even mention race. He was accepted and embraced by whites. He received their votes.

Hint: he lost focus on the responsibilities of a mayor - serving the citizens in the city that elected him. WWH began focusing on the demands of certain individuals who had funded his campaigns, but not on the needs of his other supporters.

He began filling jobs in this city with highly paid, unqualified people. Other positions were filled with people who earned exhorbitant salaries. This is not Atlanta, Chicago or New York City.

When he ceased serving the "regular people" and changed into a greedy, arrogant man, his downfall began.

Those tapes are telling and I hate to tell you, there's lots more to come. I hope you are prepared.

You continually speak of race. You appear to be as racist as the Fords, who are responsible for the racial tension in this city today. Many blacks are sick and tired of the constant calls of racism. In this day and time, that's a tired song and dance. It is used to keep the black voter in line, while doing nothing except holding the black person down.

The recall - it's about Memphis, period - nothing more, nothing less.

Buddy,

You think a lot, but you know very little. When the mayor was first elected, I voted for him then too.For all the wrong reasons though. I was just excited about the prospect of a Black mayor. I have since then become, more discriminating with my vote.If I knew then like I know now. I wouldn't have supported the mayor, in his first bid.He got elected with a one sided message.

If I had been a White citizen of Memphis, that remembered his platform in the beginning. I would be offended as well.I just began to watch the mayors actions, in the last six or seven years. If I was a Black citizen of Memphis looking for paradise. I would be upset with the mayor too. Thank God he didn't satisfy either of those groups. Those are the ones that make up the majority of his opponents. Most people that work for the city and county, are long time employees. That means they didn't just show up. If someone was doing a job paying $75,000 when they retired. We want to pay someone $30,000 to replace them. And expect someone to do the same job.

What Herenton realized is you can't run a city of hot air. If he only dealt with the needs of the needy. This city would soon dry up.Constantly taking out, never putting anything in. Eventually causes depletion.

You must be an older Black person. You accuse me of being racist, for some reason. I usually run into this argument, after people have nothing else to say. My opinion isn't based on race. It's not based on emotion either. I don't know which side of the coin you're on. But it's the wrong one.
