Done Deal, Or Not

After being empty all this time, the Pyramid finally has a tenant. The first mistake the city and county made was allowing "University Of Memphis" out of their lease. Once they did that, the Pyramid became a pink elephant. The arena was initially built for them, and with the hopes of attracting a pro basketball team. Only to discover after it was built, it didn't meet NBA qualifications. Yesterday officials announced that Bass Pro Shops had signed a developement deal for the purchase of the arena. I knew eventually whatever happened would be somewhat of a tradeoff. It left the city between a rock and a hard place. I remember Steve Cohen came to Memphis with the idea of Pro Bass Shops before he was elected congressman. I wrote a blog about it then. It would seem there would be dancing in the street, but there isn't. Some of those same people that follow Congressman Cohen blindly, are now complaining that this proposal isn't fair to blacks of his district . They don't see how someplace they will probably never visit, benefits them. Thirty million from one hundred, looks like a profit. I bet he won't be talking about this in his monthly newsletter. Where were these naysayers at, when the building was empty? Or better yet, when the congressman brought up the idea? Now it's left up to the city council and county commission and the respective Mayors. After a visit to the headquarters in Springfield Mo., all the members seemed to be impressed. All things considered. I think Bass Pro Shops is the best solution on the table. I hope this doesn't get bogged down with racial posturing, and blacks feeling slighted by whites. Even though I don't have a boat and don't go fishing. I'll be glad when we know whether it's a done deal or not.
