Steve's given name was Bernie Smith, Jr.

Thaddeus has given out so much false information. Just yesterday he changed his blog to say Bernie "Steve" Ladd, which lets me know that he didn't even know his real first name until yesterday. It is so sad.

I will tell you the truth, and I am not affiliated with ClearChannel in any way. The real reason ClearChannel didn't release info on Steve was because his family requested them not to do so. Quite a few people from Texas listen to WDIA online because of Steve, and they didn't want them to learn about his condition online. Also, ClearChannel wanted to avoid all the problems of misinformation that they had when Jaye died in 2006. If you recall, some news stations were reporting that his wife, Lesia, had also died in the crash. They were waiting on the family to give an okay on what info they could announce. And contrary to popular belief, most employees did know about Steve's illness.

On another note, I will miss Steve. I had just talked to him and Jeff (off the air) a week before his illness. He really was a nice guy -- and funny, too! Of course he was not Jaye, but he was special in his own way.

Also, pray for Jeff. This man has lost two co-hosts in two years. Although he says he's okay, I know it hurts. I realize you don't care for him, but he's not that bad on a personal level. I talk to him off the air; we disagree on a lot of things, but at the end of the day we are still cool with each other.

  2. Everytime I use something I get from him, I end up having to take it back. So, I changed the title of my post to reflect what I know him by "Steve Ladd."

I know you know what you're talking about though. I received calls yesterday stating as much. Except of course the name. The whole idea was not to have his room overun with WDIA listeners. Memphis is loaded with gawkers and onlookers. People that he didn't even know. Would be going to the hospital hanging around like family. I heard someone inquiring about "is there going to be a bus going to the funeral?" Why would someone want to go to Texas to attend a funeral of somone they probably didn't even really know?

It's not that I don't like Jeff, it's just that I stand behind my comments. If I don't have anything good to say about a person. I just don't say anything at all. He is intimidated by my intellect. I don't call in just to agree with the host. They better be prepared to prove what they say because I am. Though he considers himself smarter than the average bear. Jeff oftentimes isn't ready. He would rather try to surround himself with others who don't know either, or those just wanting to talk. Rather than simply admit he's wrong. At least not try to argue about something you're not sure about. He told me "I deal with too many facts."

I will keep him in my prayers.

You are exactly right. They didn't want everybody being nosy. If you notice, suddenly everyone is a friend now. I couldn't believe that either when someone asked about a bus. There will be enough people from Texas at the funeral. Steve is to Dallas what Jaye is to Memphis, but you never really heard him brag about it.

I heard another falsehood today on Thaddeus' show -- the funeral is on Saturday, not Friday. The wake is on Friday. There is no need for a fundraiser; everything is paid for and most of the family already live in Texas and don't need to travel very far. The news has been on several blues-related internet sites since Monday afternoon -- you didn't even have to listen to WDIA to find out. Any true "investigative journalist" would have discovered it by now; what is being told on KWAM is second-hand information mixed with rumor, innuendo, and a bunch of lies. So what if you hate Bobby O'Jay. Hey, I get sick of him, too, but don't use a dead man to promote your personal agenda. Wrong is wrong, and if I have to defend BOJ this one time, then so be it.

As for Jeff, it's strictly your prerogative. I was just speaking from my personal experience; it doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

Niecy was Steve's significant other. Who knows why benefits are being staged in his honor, Steve has been buried.

    From a family member:

I just happened across this blog and noticed the conversation. It's true that Steve has been buried but the expenses haven't been paid in full. That's the reason for the benefits and donation collections. There is a legitimate account set up in order to help the family with the expense and ALL funds collected will go to the funeral home that did the service. If you want to help, please spread the word that people can go to ANY Bank of America and make a donation deposit to the "STEVE LADD MEMORIAL TRUST FUND". We, the family would really and truly appreciate it. God bless.
