All It Takes Is One
A situation like this is not the norm anywhere. In any city in America, this would get national attention. It would probably be an isolated incident also. I don't expect any copycat killings. Someone please tell me the last time a student was shot and killed in the MCS. The people who blame Willie Herenton for everything that happens in this city and obviously across the state, are a big part of the problems we face. It's embarrassing when I read the local coverage of a story that might be read all over the world. And posters are taking potshots at the mayor and blaming him for something he has nothing to do with.If you've moved away from Memphis, "good for you." But don't act like you've moved to a Utopia though. All it takes is one incident and it's never the same. I wonder how happy you'll be when they put in toll-booths, and you have to pay to come to work? People in Desoto County are now looking to go even farther. In the next ten years you'll be in Panola County.
All the off color comments don't help the crime, schools or the taxes in Memphis. For anyone that listens to this negative conversation. It only feeds into an attitude of defeat and helplessness. Constantly posting on the Commercial Appeal website isn't equal to one citizens vote. There are those of us in Memphis, who would rather fight than switch. This has nothing to do with who is in City Hall, but who is in your house.

You have a right to your opinion. I would like if you would give just one example of why you feel that way.
Here's a glaring example.
When you have a Mayor that says on TV that "No Mayor can control crime"
For starters, this sends a message of despair to the law abiding citizens that effectivly says "I am your leader and I give up, no hope"
It ALSO sends a message to the criminal element that the cities leader has given up as well and its open season for crime.
You may counter that he's correct, but I shall submit witness that Rudy Gullianai did a remarkable job cleaning up crime in New York City, and their crime rate was MUCH worse than ours.
Want more ? shall I go on with his racial polorizing ?

How about his "Victory" speech given when winning back his iffice in this last election ?
I could be here writing paragraphs aout this individual.
And the REAL rub is I voted for him initially in his first election. I felt memphis DESERVED a black Mayor to reflect the city's majority population.
I felt that people would now feel they had someone that was "Like" them and they finally would get an even shake.
He couldn't have proved me more wrong.
Dr. Herenton was effective in his first, possibly 2nd term of office, but subsequent terms he's shown he's thuggish, still ghetto, and is polorizing.
Memphis can do FAR better than this.
Considering the context of his statements,he told the truth.The only way to control crime is by hiring more police. And a change of mindset by the people in general.We aren't fedup like the people of New York City yet.The Mayor proposed to hire 500 new police and the citizens had a fit.
We have to experience a few more drive-by shootings.
The Mayor's comments at his speech were directed at a specific group. The only ones that was offended were those who were guilty. There is a air of racism in this community. If the man who holds the top job in this city, sees it clearly? Those who don't see it are either blind or not telling the truth.We're not dealing with a Qwame Kilpatrick here.
You supported Herenton initially for the wrong reasons. We do and have always needed the best man for the job. The man has been in office 16 yrs, and the city has evolved. Some good, some bad. Over time you become more powerful. The man is human. His ego comes into play periodically. Some people want him to act like a newcomer.
If the city can do far better? I wish that person would run.
