They Might Get It Right
Democrats seem to be putting a lot of stock in early voting. Unless you commit voter fraud; you can only vote once. I'm not so sure you can trust the polls. All throughout this election the polls have been repeatedly wrong. If they lay all their cards on the table early. They won't have any left on the big day. In my area there have been lines around the buildings. They're predicting record breaking numbers at the polls. I've heard numbers as high as a 80% turnout. That of course benefits Obama in this city, but he's going to have to win more than the major black cities. The longer it takes for the undecided voters to go out and pull the lever. The better it will be for John McCain. The longer they listen and study the issues. The more informed they become. There's the chance they might get it right.
I saw the lines at early voting and they were in line like they were at the food stamp office getting their monthly allotment. Needless to say who was in line.
ReplyDeleteWho was in line?
ReplyDeleteIt's not just Black people. I live in Middle Tennessee and according to news reports, Davidson County (Nashville) is second in voter turnout in the state at 157,000. Blacks make up only about 26% there.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter anyway -- Tennessee is squarely in McCain's column.
That was a racist remark. What about Nashville itself?
ReplyDeleteNashville & Davidson County are consolidated, so the total speaks for both.

Election Night: An election map to follow the national presidential election electoral college count with live results of how Memphis and Shelby County voted from the Shelby County Election Commission.
After collecting another 25,117 early and absentee ballots on Wednesday, the Shelby County Election Commission now shows that 35.0 percent of the 647,510 registered voters have already participated in Tuesday's local, state and federal elections.
Of that total, 92,2880 registered black voters have cast ballots, or 40.7 percent of the early-voting count and 41.3 percent of the county's 223,213 registered black voters.
There have been 67,347 votes cast by registered white voters, or 29.7 percent of the early-voting count and 30.7 percent of the county's 219,582 registered white voters.
Other or unclassified voters are showing the biggest increases in the last week, with 67,347 "other" registered voters, or 29.7 percent of the early-voting count and 32.9 percent of the county's 204,715 other or unclassified voters.
For some perspective, in the 2004 fall election, white registered voters comprised 42.5 percent of the early-vote in Shelby County, compared to 36 percent black registered voters and 21.5 percent other.
Already, there have been more than 32,000 more votes cast by black registered voters than there were in all of the 2004 early voting.
Election commission officials also believe that there more African-American voters are represented in the "other" category than white voters.
Voters are asked, but not required, to include racial background on registration forms. If none are checked, the voter goes into the "other" category.
The practice dates back to requirements connected to voting-rights laws, and campaigns regularly request that the election commission provide statistical information.
Last-minute stragglers they may have been, but the people who came to the Agricenter before sunrise Thursday morning were determined to take advantage of early voting.
Those at the head of the line said they arrived by 6:45, and by 8, when the early-voting station began to operate, approximately 275 people formed a line that wound through a tight lobby and meandered some 75 yards down the sidewalk outside.
Today is the last day to take advantage of Shelby County's early-voting for Tuesday's local, state and federal elections. Voters can go to any one of 19 locations throughout the county and cast their votes today, with stations cutting off the line at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, voters must go to their assigned precincts to cast a ballot. The Shelby County Election Commission has been adding machines to those precincts and expects about a 350-to-1 ratio of machines to voters at most of them. That's much better than in previous elections.
Figures for Wednesday's early voting are not yet available, but through Tuesday 201,817 early and absentee votes had been cast.
Officials at the Agricenter location said an estimated 500 people were in line Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they had to begin turning people away who missed the cutoff. It took until 10 p.m. to get the last voter through, and it could go later tonight.
Election Commission officials are encouraging people to consult their website, www.shelbyvote.com, and go down to the left side and click on "Early Voting Daily Totals" to find sites that may be less busy.
