This Is What I Mean

The women here in Memphis fall for the pretty boy or the trick every time. Not necessarily in that order and they like it even better if the man is both. Either you give them chills or they want you to pay their bills. Heaven forbid you have big money and get a reputation of being a big spender. Unfortunately in this city, where the women go the men will follow. I find it funny how Kriner Cash turned a plan the public initially disagreed with into a three year extension on his contract. All the while still getting what he wanted done to begin with.

I don't disagree with what he's doing. I saw a documentary on the school system in Detroit the other day that was frightening. I don't think the citizens of Memphis foresee the schools on the horizon unless something is done. I'm just making note of what he has done thus far. Every thing people have tried to throw at him has fallen on deaf ears with the public. He is the perfect person for this job.. Men who usually have some type of following with the women have found him to be a not so easy target. Even former Mayor Willie Herenton had to accept it was a fight he wouldn't win. He usually has the support of the "100 Black Women." Even Thaddeus Matthews can't get his crowd to bite. You will never hear them talking about what he said about Kriner Cash. It just comes across as him being jealous. When I talk about style over substance. This is what I mean.

Supt. Cash meets Memphis City School board's standards
But no bonus yet
Memphis City Schools Supt. Kriner Cash’s first-year performance met the standards set by the Board of Education. Whether he merits a bonus of up to $10,000 is still to be decided.

Monday, the board agreed on the matrix for grading him, but no member suggested a bonus for a year that included the district being named a finalist for nearly $100 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, eliminating scores of bus routes and pushing harder for more rigorous instruction.

Cash did receive a 2.5 percent raise on July 1, according to the board counsel. Based on his annual salary of $258,000, Cash will earn an additional $6,450 this year that does not have to be approved by the board.

Any bonus, however, is paid at the discretion of the board. “Any member of the board could bring it up next week at the board meeting,” said board president Martavius Jones. “Unless that happens and it is approved by the full board, there will be no bonus.”

The board evaluated Cash last month, giving him high marks in 21 of 25 categories — 84 percent — but demanded improvement in keeping the board informed, soliciting feedback from the community and staff, treating staff fairly and maintaining community respect.

“I’ve asked Dr. Cash to meet individually with each one of us on the performance over the past year that has not been acceptable or needs improvement,” Jones said. “And he has agreed to that.”

In the 71 goals Cash set for himself, including boosting the number of students performing at advanced levels on state tests, he got zeroes in 10 categories and showed only marginal achievement in 12 others.

The overall effect was that the district as a whole did not make adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law, dropping back into the failing mode it had struggled to break under Supt. Carol Johnson.

Among those objectives, which dealt largely with academic achievement, Cash earned a score of 63.5 percent.

Cash said he was laying a foundation “perhaps for the first time” in Memphis to raise expectations for city school children.

“We’re having to lay out structural changes to make that happen. In this first year, you saw some emphasis in some other areas. It is because you have to lay out structure to make this happen,” he said.

Chief among them are investments in more school security and health clinics to catch what Cash has called a startling array of health problems among students and staff.

Because the evaluation form the board adopted did not include a way to give Cash a final grade, the board last month asked Jones and Cash to work out an agreement. Monday, Jones recommended it average the scores together for a final grade of 73.8 percent. The board will vote on the issue next Monday.

“Dr. Cash could have very easily set his performance goals at increasing those who are proficient or below proficient,” Jones said. “He chose to base his performance on the more advanced,” he said, suggesting Cash deserved credit for high standards.

Board member Tomeka Hart said Cash’s evaluation “showed despite some problems, we had a great school year. That is what we want to communicate to the community.”
