Connect The Dots

I figured Wanda Halbert's game out long ago, so I'm not surprised at what she does that makes the news. Her latest incident with the MPD just goes to prove what I was thinking all the time. Those doe eyes and the clueless look on her face don't give her a pass with me. She may very well be one of the most divisive members on the city council. She represents a segment of our community that is a direct result of our city's decline. We have gang members on the police force and their baby's mamas in powerful positions making decisions. Black women want a BMW (black man working) so they can at least pay child support. Many of them were much less successful in their personal lives than their professional. Hence the political atmosphere we have now. http://indepcons.blogspot.com/2008/08/more-of-same.html

It's been said voters have a short memory. Based on the way Memphians treat Ms. Halbert and others that's true. They never hold them accountable for what they say. How quickly we forget. It wasn't long ago she was leading the residency requirement to only hire Memphis residents to be police. http://indepcons.blogspot.com/2008/11/preparing-for-next-election.html Now we have something happen like this. This is more than just a coincidence. Connect the dots

Police: Wanda Halbert didn't interfere with investigation of son

Memphis City Council member Wanda Halbert didn't interfere with a police investigation of her son earlier this month, the Memphis Police Department announced today.

Director Larry Godwin ordered an internal investigation after officers issued Halbert's son, Kelvin Burrus, 24, a misdemeanor citation for marijuana possession after a disturbance June 13.

According to a police report, officers who were working a case nearby responded to 919 S. Highland about 4 a.m. when they heard a "loud disturbance" coming from the front yard.

Burrus' girlfriend Denae Clark, 25, was standing at the window of his 1996 Jeep Cherokee "cursing and shouting" during a heated argument with Burrus, who was in the driver's seat of the vehicle, the report states.

Police found marijuana on Burrus.

Godwin wanted to know whether Halbert, who arrived at the scene, influenced his officers, who could have taken Burrus to jail.

Police officers have the discretion to issue misdemeanor citations in lieu of arrest.

But today, the department said Halbert was called to the scene by police and did nothing improper.

"She acted as a concerned parent and did not interfere or attempt to influence the officers," according to an MPD statement.

The department is still trying to determine whether the case warrants administrative charges for violations of department rules by the officers involved, the statement said.

The police report doesn't mention Halbert's arrival at the scene, but she is listed on the report as the owner of the Jeep.
