Is This Fair

There is going to be an alternative fair to the traditional Mid-South Fair this year. The Mid-South fair has been a Memphis tradition for the last 151 years. Expo South is putting on the first Delta Fair and Music Festival at the Memphis Agricenter. The new venue is being put on starting next week, so it will be over one week before the other begins. Based on the entertainment and location alone. It's safe to assume their target audience is different than that of the "Mid South Fair." It will be interesting to see how one fair affects the other. Though it may be nice and new. No way an upstart venture can compare with such an old and established organization. Will you attend one or both? If just one; which one? Read the link below for more info:

Please Pardon Me

First of all Scooter Libby wasn't pardoned; his sentence was commuted. He was still found guilty and has to pay a fine. He just won't have to do jail time. Since the presidents critics are hanging him out to dry. I thought it might be interesting to know who Bill Clinton did pardon not just commute. The list reads like a small book.

FYI

Canadian and German universal medicine went bankrupt. It resulted in national financial crisis in both countries. Germany immediately changed their rules to deny many common medical procedures in order to cut costs. Canada followed suit.Vote for universal healthcare if:

1. You want a group of politically connected physicians deciding what treatments and procedures you are allowed.

2. You want to see a reduction in common treatments and procedures when compared to today's private insurance guarantees.

3. You want your doctor to follow every guideline and rule of universal healthcare procedures regardless how they affect you.

4. You want to pay cash out of pocket for unauthorized procedures denied by your government.

5.You want your government to decide what is best for you.

Wonder Whose Crying Now

Today for the first time I saw a shaken John Ford. Throughout this whole thing, he has remained calm almost to a fault. A lot of people felt he wasn't going to do any time. I guess he believed that as well. The best defense team in the world couldn't pull that off. I guess it finally dawned on him that he wasn't dealing with the South Memphis voters. Today from behind tears he stated that he couldn't do ten years in prison. Which he could possibly get. He hasn't even been to trial yet on the charges waiting in Nashville. Read below what his attorney had to say.

Ford's attorney argues pre-sentence report unfair

By Lawrence Buser (Contact)
Updated 02:09 p.m., August 27, 2007

John Ford's attorney argued this afternoon that a federal pre-sentence report was inaccurate and suggests a sentencing range that is too high for the former state senator's bribery conviction.

Ford, who was convicted in April of accepting $55,000 in bribes, legally faces up to 10 years in prison, but his defense says it should be limited to 27 to 33 months.

His attorney said the pre-sentence report, which is prepared by the federal probation office, is "skewed" in the government's favor.

"I would submit that the pre-sentence report reads like an FBI file," defense attorney Michael Scholl told U.S. Dist. Court Judge J. Daniel Breen. "I have a man who has no criminal record whatsoever."

Scholl, whose remarks came as the sentencing hearing began, has indicated he may call 10 or more witnesses, leaving some concern that the hearing may not be completed today.

Ford, 65, who was wearing a dark gray suit, also has federal charges pending in Nashville, where he is accused of failure to report some $800,000 from two health care firms for whom he worked as a consultant. He sat silently as his attorney argued his sentencing case.

Federal prosecutor Tim DiScenza argued that the pre-sentence report was accurate and that information tracked testimony from the trial.

I Can Support Whomever I Choose

Let me first say I'm not racist, so my comments won't be misconstrued. But week after week these "Rednecks" get on the radio lying about Mayor Herenton and his tenure. Instead of discounting his administration with some facts. They try to attack the man personally. I don't agree with all his personal shortcomings, but no one is perfect. "He who is without sin cast the first stone". Their main problem is the fact that he is an outspoken Black man. For the one that made the comments about the MCS. Yes, I graduated from a Memphis city school and I have more of a grip on things than you. The permanent underclass are those individuals that allow themselves to be influenced by liars like you. These people in most cases don't even live in Memphis anyway. They think you're smarter than most Memphians, but they're not. They just spent more time in school. Now they want to blame the mayor because many of the young people cannot read. That's why industry doesn't come here. Because we have an uneducated workforce. The qualified workforce is scarce to nonexistent.

For those that want to blame the Mayor for crime. They fail to mention that though slight, crime is down in the city. The Mayor asked for the money to hire 500 more policeman. What did people like councilwoman Carol Chumney have to say about that? They didn't want to spend the extra money. They accused him of wasting taxpayer funds. Everything he comes up with, they are against it. Anything that can be done will require money, in the form of a tax increase. How many citizens supported "D.A. Bill Gibbons" when he asked us to support stiffer laws? That would do more to combat crime than anything the mayor could do. Until the rape took place in "Chickasaw Gardens", his plight went almost unnoticed. The Black community was too busy accusing him of being racist in regards to the Mickey Wright case. Those Whites outside the city limits feel like they're exempt.

Opponents of the Mayor won't ask me the tough questions as they call them. Because they know I have an answer. These "Herenton Haters" want to put all his supporters in the same boat. People who blindly follow the Mayor. I don't fall in that category. Some of us understand and are able to articulate our ideas. They harp on the weakest argument they can find, and try to hone in on that. Somebody who looks at the fight with Joe Frazier as one of the mayor's accomplishments. Is not the same as someone like myself. That's only wishful thinking on their part that won't win them votes. I don't support the Mayor just because he's Black. I happen to think he's the best man for the job. I don't agree with everything he does, but most of it I do. The good far outweighs the bad. For one thing he has only increased the taxes three times in sixteen years. If the county could say the same. I would be in excellent shape right now. Where were all the detectives when Jim Rout was robbing us blind?

Personally I don't blame Mayor Herenton for not debating his opponents. That only gives people who otherwise wouldn't have a chance, to get in a blow. A debate would benefit former "county commissioner John Willingham" the most. He knows about all the mistakes made in the last sixteen years because he signed on to a lot of them himself. Why did he vote to let the "University Of Memphis" out of it's lease with the now empty "Pyramid"? Where were these investigative skills while "Jim Rout" was in office? Of the top four candidates he has the slimmest chance of winning. They have had a couple of debates already that have been unmemorable at best. In spite of the Mayors absence they still haven't made any lasting impressions. I have yet to hear any of their positions other than their sweeping proposals. We all want better education, more high paying jobs and less crime in Memphis. What exactly do they propose to do to bring this about? They only debate about the mayor not participating.

I encountered what I think drives most of Mayor Herenton's opponents. The innate desire to dominate those around them. They don't want to persuade you over to their way of thinking through reasoning. They just want you to accept it because it's their opinion. After all, they were smart enough to leave the city. Of course if you listen to them you will never figure it out.How do these candidates plan to bring the races together, when their supporters can't even be civil? That brings me to why the Mayor reacts as he does. I experienced the same emotion I think the Mayor experiences. You exercise patience and restraint in dealing with those who don't agree with you. And you try to explain your position without being short or using expletives. They take that as a sign of weakness on your part. When you strike back they call you arrogant and disrespectful. Totally disregarding the fact that you are an alpha male. When attacked eventually you're going to strike back. Just like the Mayor is his own man. It's the same way with my vote. I can support whomever I choose.

Do You Think She Was Cheated

At last weeks MCS school board meeting an issue about a student not being selected for the "National Honor Society" was on the agenda. Her parents and several other citizens feel she was denied based on her race. The student was Black, her principal was White. She graduated with a 5.0 GPA, and a long list of achievements. Some people seem to feel that in itself is reason enough for her to be selected. It seems kike we always fall through the cracks. Her principal seems to think she didn't meet the criteria for leadership. With such a high GPA at least we know she's smart. That's not enough to get her selected to the "National Honor Society" though. That's why I have pasted the requirements of the selection process below.

National Honor Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Honor Society (NHS), established in 1921, is a recognition program for American high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Students are selected for membership through an established school chapter in secondary public and accredited private schools by a five member Faculty Council. Candidates must meet the chapter's requirement for scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to be selected for membership.
Continued participation in service projects is required to retain membership. Members must also maintain the chapter's required cumulative GPA.

The board is going to take the request to overide the principal's decision under consideration. They will anounce their decision at next weeks meeting. I can't make an informed decision since I haven't heard both sides. I know Jennings Bernard was asked to speak on her behalf. Which I think is a move inspired by frustration. Why would his input be needed, unless to enter the race card. Based on the limited information that was given. Do you think she was cheated?

Don't Confuse Ignorance With Compassion

I heard a local radio talk show host try to condone this rampant political lemming-like behavior in the Black community on compassion. That could account for a small percentage, but not the overwhelming majority. One of the most adamant critics of Mayor Herenton called in and made a statement she couldn't substantiate. Useless to say "she does that all the time". The host didn't agree with what she said, but he didn't put up much of an argument either. Unlike he has done before, when he has been obviously wrong. Instead of holding her to the fire and making her back up what she said. He tried to cover it up by giving her an excuse.

We're Not Prepared For Playschool Politics

I'm all for young people getting involved in the political atmosphere. Having said that;"you don't get to be the boss the first day on the job". Unless of course no better qualified person is available for the job. But that's not the case here. Political experience and life experience are two different things. For all those people that use inexperiemce a measuring stick. Just because he's not incarcerated isn't a reason to elect him to office. Most eighteen yr. olds aren't mature enough to handle such a responsibility as being City Councilman. Memphis city government isn't balanced enough to support a person growing up on the job. With seven of the thirteen seats being up for grabs. I don't think this is the time for experimentation. I have no problem with a young person running for office. I do have a problem with older voters seeing him as a solution to the city's problems. Why do we feel the need to elect a person just because he's young and inexperienced? Since we can't get a brain surgeon to do a job that doesn't require such expertice. We want to poison the well for all the other politicians. And put the first person without a negative history in office. Totally disregading what matters most. Does the young man possess the characteristics of honesty and integrity? This young man has never even paid rent. He still lives at his parents home, and works for his father. That's not a bad thing, but not such a good thing either. Below is the link to his campaign website:

Museums Need Money Too

I heard a show yesterday on WDIA, in regards to a scheduled meeting to save the "Civil Rights Museum". I was unable to get in to the show to talk to state representatives D- Barbara Cooper and D- G.A. Hardaway. Who both came on the air to alert the public of the planned meeting to discuss the museum's future. According to them there is an all out drive to take over the "Civil Rights Museum" by a select group of board members. Headed by local businessman and board member "Pitt Hyde". The representatives call the action being taken a move to privatize what belongs to the public. After farther investigation of the matter. I'm not so sure, they're not misrepresenting the facts.

This story has a strong resemblance to the "Beale Street Development" fiasco. It symbolizes a changing of the guard so to speak. Thus bringing in someone wanting to hold the management more accountable than in the past. The fact that this is a state museum won't change. They'll still be getting state funding like they always have. The only thing in question is the continued management role of the " National Civil Rights Museum Foundation Inc.". That's a change, that just may be in order. They want to enjoy the benefits of Mr. Hyde's money minus his input. You can't expect people to keep picking up the tab for your decisions without eventually crying out. In this situation that's exactly whats been happening all the time. They had been given a blank check to do their business, to keep up the general maintenance of the museum itself. Based on recent pictures and what I've heard lately. They haven't been doing that.Someone has been falling terribly short.

You Can't Tell Them Nothing

I was talking with my Goddaughter earlier today and I finally figured this whole thing out. My son is more laid back, so he never caused this to cross my mind. He asks questions on an "as needed" basis. She asks questions one right behind the other though, and they all seem to be thought out. Maybe that's why I hadn't seen it before now. Maybe it just wasn't time. The children are a mirror image of the adults right or wrong. The same thing that has consumed the adults in Memphis has taken over the children too. Some of these people couldn't read their name in boxcar letters. Yet they require their officials to have a masters degree and be working on a PHD. I have often said when it comes to local elections. We want a rocket scientist to fill a run of the mill job. That could be filled by someone with not as much formal education. Now we want to complain because some have succumbed to the pressure and went out and bought degrees. Some jobs only require that you be a representative of those who elected you. Why should a councilman have to be a lawyer; when all his constituents are law abiding blue collar workers? All a person has to presumably do is know more than the voters. Some people consider that a qualification.

This same mentality has spilled over to our children. They think they know more than their parents do, and oftentimes they are right. What need would a preschooler have for knowing how to do fractions? Why do they need to start thinking about a major in elementary school? I think we may be requiring a little much of them to soon. Children these days don't get a chance to be children. A whole summer has gone by and I haven't seen many children outside playing yet. They spend all their time inside playing video games. As soon as they are old enough to talk and make a complete sentence. We start preparing their resumes for the Ivy league schools. Realistically most of them won't achieve our expectations. But hold your horses, don't stop the presses. Do we live up to, or meet their expectations for their parents? Everybody thinks they know more than they really do. You can't tell them nothing, because they think they know everything.

Common Sense Is Not Always Common

I heard a young man today who is going back to school to further his education. I think that in itself is a wonderful thing, but not the total answer for Blacks.I won't say it publicly, but this is what I think. We suffer from a lack of morality and a propensity to screw things up. We can get all the degrees we want, it still won't help. If we don't change our wicked ways and immoral way of thinking. It's only going to get worse. We have a above average understanding of all the wrong things. Unfortunately that's not the case with foolish stuff. We raise little children who know every word to a rap song, but don't know the alphabet. Some people are on the Dean's list in school, but they don't have sense enough to come in out of the rain.

Questions from the same vein have been popping up on radio talkshows all week. Why do smart women make such dumb choices? Should I continue to see her even though she's went back to her husband? Does he love me if he doesn't give me money? All these questions have been asked by supposedly educated people. Any person of average intelligence should be able to figure this out. Yet many people with college degrees aren't able to figure it out. This society puts to much emphasis on knowledge gained from books. We would be a lot better off if we just had more mother wit.

Sloppy Seconds

Many of the same people behind the draft A.C. movement; after failing to convince him to run. Have now decided to endorse Herman Morris for city mayor. I was about to say he should feel betrayed by those who put him up to run to begin with. They had been awfully quiet as of late, leaving him out there hanging alone. They had all but written him and Carol Chumney off. John Willingham has never really been considered a factor. Though he is the lone Republican, not even by his own party. All efforts were focused on convincing A.C. Wharton to throw his hat in the ring. Some seem to think he could beat Herenton hands down. At least that's what they were saying. I think that's just wishful thinking. Herenton haters are willing to go for anything. What that would have done, is split up the vote. Allowing someone to win who wouldn't have otherwise had a chance.

Before I had a chance to say it, the long lost supporters had already come out of the woodwork. Bill Adkins and Lasimba Gray gave new life to the Morris campaign. Now they're giving press conferences in support of Herman Morris. Something is strange about this picture. Though Morris claims to be a Democrat. His support base are mostly Republicans. His campaign manager is on the Republican steering comittee. I think he is what you call a DINO, (Democrat in name only). I guess he has decided to take his help where he can get it from. Even to the point of taking sloppy seconds.

Veiled Pro-Homosexual Legislation

I seldom agree with pastor Leo (Lasimba) Gray, but on this one he is absolutely right. This is supposed to be his area of expertise being that he is a Baptist minister. I am pleased to see him addressing a spiritual matter instead of something of a social nature. Usually when you hear from him it's something about race. It has nothing to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Some have given him the title of a leader in the black community. I don't particularly agree with that. In this instance I hope they're right though.I am not impressed with him always being the first one to throw a rock. Since some people consider that a characteristic of a leader. Those who listen to him anyway, hopefully they'll listen now.

Congressman Steve Cohen is a master of deception and clouding the issues. He is both an experienced politician and a lawyer to boot.Unlike most of his supporters he understands that this bill is full of loopholes. It provides the perfect opportunity for some over zealous lawyer to win some exorbitant judgement because a victim is gay. That or have the law misinterpreted from state to state. Like they have done with the institution of marriage. Don't say it won't happen. Look at all the different groups that are protected under this bill. Some of which are illegal anyway. How do you explain the ministers that have already been arrested for their sermons? For those who say that it hasn't happened, just read the links below.

For his black supporters, which are vast in number. The district he represents is 60% black. When is the last time to your knowledge, a hate crime was committed against a black person? Don't bring up the Jasper Tx. murder of James Byrd. That happened almost 10 years ago, and was the first crime of that notoriety since Emmit Till. The biggest problem facing blacks today is "black on black crime". The outcome of those crimes won't be affected by the passage of this bill. Unless of course the victim is gay. In between renaming buildings and showing up at black funerals and birthday parties. What exactly has the congressman done? Other than be a major advocate for his underlying agenda "Homosexual rights". This is nothing more than a veiled attempt to pass pro-homosexual legislation.

Barry Bonds Ties Hank Aaron's Record (755)

Now I See The Connection

I wondered what the connection was between "congressman Steve Cohen" and former Olivett pastor "Kenneth Whalum". What could the congressman have done to get the retired minister to endorse him? His entire career has been devoted to causes a minister of the gospel should find offensive to say the least. Certainly not form the basis for a ongoing bond. After watching this video I understand Whalum's motivation. This is payback for selling his influence in the black community. Mr. Cohen has sponsored legislation to have the Third street Post Office renamed in his honor. H.R.2587 : To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 555 South 3rd Street Lobby in Memphis, Tennessee, as the "Kenneth T. Whalum, Sr. Post Office". Talk about stroking someones ego. This is even more proof of business as usual in the 9th district.

I Haven't Seen Him Lately

I saw Deaunta Farrow's cousin Unseld Nance Jr., who was with him at the time of the shooting. Only once in the interview he gave immediately after it happened. Before the lawyers and advisors had a chance to coach him on what to say. That's the first place I heard that Deaunta had a toy pistol. Since then the accounts of what happened have varied depending on who you talk to, and their involvement. Some people have painted a picture of police brutality and they weren't even there. There were only four people there and one of them is dead now. Unseld Nance Jr. is one of the two, possibly three people that actually know what happened. And I haven't seen him lately.

Deaunta Who

The hype and public interest surrounding the death of Deaunta Farrow has all but disappeared. Even the family's appointed media advisor (Thaddeus Matthews) has toned down his baseless rhetoric. He was one of the first to label the accused policeman (Erik Sammis)a cold-blooded murderer. In addition to be the first to publicly reveal the officer's name. He hasn't written one of his biased accounts of what went on lately. That seems to be the extent of his contribution to the case. Posting and giving information according to his investigations on his blog. Making people wait to get an interview with the boy's mother might have backfired. After a week or so it wasn't front page news anymore. Opportunist Al Sharpton came to town and milked it media wise for what it was worth. When it was obvious it wouldn't get much national attention, Jesse Jackson didn't even bother to come. I initially had respect for his mother for exhibiting what I thought was a plea for justice, by asking everyone to wait for the results of the investigation. As it turns out she just didn't know what to say. The public interest seemed to wane once her attorney 'Javier Bailey' filed a lawsuit for 125 million dollars. Most people then became suspect of the mother's motives. Based on the few interviews I've seen her give. She doesn't come across as this scandalous mother trying to capitalize of the death of her son. She seems more like a deer blinded by the headlights. She doesn't know which way to turn. I'm sure she'll still end up getting something due to her loss. Whatever happens it'll be less than it could be, due to some of the choices she has made. I think she may be the victim of getting some bad advice.

The Infamous E-Mail

Evidently something I said created a furor of sorts on "Let's talk about it" last Thursday night. I am critical of the sanitation department due to some of them not doing their jobs. One of the frequent callers (Michael) who obviously works for the sanitation department himself. Wants to paint this pretty picture of the job they're doing around the city. In spite of the dismal job they're doing, and contractural agreements, he thinks they still deserve a raise. BTW, they only work half a day. I don't know where he works, but I don't see it where I live. The department gets no sympathy from me. He claims I'm always talking negative, just because I'm right. This whole thing seems to have gotten started because I pointed out to Denise that she seems to turn a deaf ear to their misinformation. She put a spin on what I said as usual, whether by choice or unintentional. Below is a copy of the e-mail. Do you think I was being negative?

What does the fever have to do with the sanitation workers working half a day? That's just some weak excuse for why they aren't doing what they're supposed to do. It doesn't take but one person to dump the truck. I would rather pay him a little extra if necessary. In order for the rest of them to work a full day.Martin Luther King didn't come to Memphis for these new sanitation workers to half do their job. I remember when they went in your backyards and when they ran twice a week. Now they run once a week and you have to put the garbage on the curb. You might have to wait a month for the trash trucks to come. You put green limbs on the curb. By the time they pick it up, most of the leaves have dried up and blown away. Some of these jokers leave it nastier than it was before they came. As for the trucks leaking in front of my house. I assure you they won't be parking them in front of my house. The trucks rolling down the streets are leaking still. I guess they need to get off at 10 o'clock now. Are you that uninformed or do you need glasses? If you can't see that, glasses won't help though. This city in some places is nastier than it's ever been. Or are you just keeping up the pace of the show? You never seem to hold certain people to any proof. You let them ramble on and on about nothing. That guy calls your show every night and tells the same lie.You haven't challenged him yet. I pay property taxes and a light bill. Both of which pay his salary. The only research I need to do is see them picking up the trash.
